The strathspey is a Scottish speciality. In Ireland it is often known as a "highland."

Basic strathspey rhythm

The stratsphey is always notated in common time:

Tempo and Feel

The strathspey is kind of a "super-hornpipe" - with even stronger accents and dotted feel than the hornpipe. It is nearly always notated in a dotted rhythm:

usually with some Scotch snaps thrown in:

The tempo is slightly lower than a hornpipe - about 160 beats per minute.

Rhythm patterns

You can use the same basic patterns as for the hornpipe. Just play them a little bit slower and heavier and add some Scotch snaps here and there.
