Along with Stockton's Wing, De Danann was one of the most influential Irish folkbands of the generation after The Chieftains and The Dubliners.

The band was founded by fiddler Frankie Gavin and guitarist/bozouki player Alec Finn who has been credited for introducing th bouzouki to Irish traditional music. The original line-up included Charlie Piggot, but after he had to quit the banjo De Danann has not had a regular banjo player.
