 Some, but not nearly all, banjos come with an adjustable tailpiece allowing to change the strings' angle across the bridge. Turn the adjustment screw clockwise for a more powerful sound (make sure you don't go so far that the strings actually touch the head of course), turn it anti-clockwise for a gentler sound with more sustain.

The difference is very minute, but it's by far the easiest tonal adjustment to do on the banjo.
