 The tension hoop is the ring that sits around the top of the head. It's held in place by the tension hooks. The tension hoop is of course a rather vital part of the banjo, but even the cheapest and tackiest instruments nearly always have decent ones, so it's hardly ever a problem. A really sturdy (and expensive) brass tension hoop will give the banjo more sustain and "ring" though.
