 The armrest is partly there for comfort, partly to keep your playing arm from resting on and damping the head. It's not a very critical part of the banjo and while many banjoists like them, some prefer not to have one at all while others don't really seem to care one way or the other.

A modern banjo comes with a separate armrest attached with a bracket between two tension hooks easily removable if you don't want it. Older banjos can have the armrest soldered/welded on to the tension hooks or no armrest at all.
