Solo playing

Playing the tune on a bass instrument can be fun and very effective. It's not something you'd want to do often though.

Accompaniment

Some people say they don't play bass in Irish traditional music. Although that isn't really true, bass playing is considerably rarer here than in many other similar styles.

If you want to use a bass instrument, the bass banjo is a very interesting alternative. It's much more portable than a double bass and has a tone far more suited to acoustic music than an electric bass guitar. And of course, if you bring a bass banjo on stage, you can be absolutely sure the audience will remember you!
